Add PhotosJohn England, the son of William and Mary Watson
England was born in 1755 in Bucks County, PA. In
1789 John purchased from Christopher
Musselman 59-1/2 acres here that went down to
the Rappahannock River. John later married Ann
Musselman, daughter of Christian Musselman and
they had nine children.
John named his farm Seine Pocket for the Indian
fish traps he found in the river. The house was
built using huge stones from the Rappahannock,
some were 2' x 2' rose quartz. The family's stone
circular well still stands off the lift station access
road at the top of Denison Street.
John England served as a private in the Virginia
Colony Army under Captain Mason Pilcher and
Col. William Garrand. While waiting to be called to
duty he assisted the war efforts by making firearms
at Hunter's Iron Works for which he received no
compensation. His pension application for this
additional "service" time was denied. After the war,
John worked as a blacksmith.
In June 1907 the England family descendants sold
the property near the river to the Fredericksburg
Power Company, though timber rights for two
years and a 150' square family cemetery located
off Battery Point down near the river was retained
by the family. The rest of the land was sold out of
the England/Brooks family in the 1940s.
