Add PhotosAdopted by the Gainesville Volunteers in 2022. The Doby Cemetery is a cemetery of historical significance recognized by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The Doby Cemetery with its first burial in 1811 is one of Hancock County's oldest cemeteries. The Doby Cemetery was started by Jean Baptiste Doby, who received a Spanish land grant in 1809 and moved from the Normandie region of France to start the Doby Plantation which burned down at the end of the 19th century. There is also a mass grave of Confederate Dead in the cemetery that were slain at the Battle of Gainesville, MS in 1862. The cemetery has now been restored and kept up by Jack DuPont in the name of the Gainesville Volunteers SCV Camp 373. If you interested in touring this cemetery, please contact us. Please note this cemetery is surrounded by private property so without booking with us and us contacting the landowner you are trespassing.
