Joeday Newsom
Davisboro, Washington County, Georgia, USA
WASHINGTON COUNTY GEORGIA TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS by Elizabeth Pritchard Newsom (wife of Jesse Strickland Newsom) copy 1967/1968, "Joeday Newsom Family Cemetery - Location: 1 & 1/2 miles south of Fenn's Bridge on the Davisboro-Fenn's Bridge Road on the Newsom Place.
Note: The cemetery lot is entirely enclosed by a rock wall about 4 & 1/2' high with no opening for a gate and is today surrounded by pasture. Joeday Newsom born 1772 died Oct 19, 1838 was buried there about 300 yards west of his residence. Two other members of his family were also buried there, but the Newsom Family today is not sure who the other two were.
I contacted Mrs. Newsom's daughter, Jo Newsom Cummings, on November 21, 1998 and received directions and permission to access the private land which remains in her family. The cemetery is off Ga. 88 a half mile south off Ga. 231 to the east. The land is now planted in a pine forest, but the cemetery is located off a farm road which appeared to be an old public road. One wall of the cemetery has been torn down by a fallen tree and the cemetery is in poor repair. There is evidence that trees have grown in and around the walled cemetery for years, but have been recently cut down, however the stumps remain.
On November 23, 1998, Dr. Newsome, Steve and Mollie Newsome Sudhoff and I visited the cemetery with Jo Newsom Cummings. Jo told us that the original road between Davisboro and Fenn's Bridge which lies about fifty feet to the east of the Cemetery was closed when the State built Highway 231 (located 1/4 to 1/2 mile west) between Georgia Highway 88 and Davisboro. The right of way for the new road was traded for the old roadway, therefore the original dirt road is now part of the private land held by Jo Newsom Cummings.
According to Dr. Newsome and Jo, a post office use to be located at Fenn's Bridge. I found (at the Washington County Library) many references to unclaimed letters for Newsome's shown at this post office. Today, a modern concrete bridge crosses the Ogeechee River. On the west bank stand an historical marker commemorating the infamous invasion of the homeland by Sherman's renegades.
