Add PhotosThe Protestant Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd was organized in 1868, the first Episcopal parish in the neighborhood. Incorporated in 1869, founding members of the parish were drawn from the churches of Emmanuel and Free Church of St. John.
In 1873, a large frame edifice, with seating for 500, was constructed at a cost of about $4000. In 1887, the debt owned for the ground rents was paid off and the congregation raised funds for the construction of a building designed by T. Frank Miller. The cornerstone was laid on November 16, 1889 and was consecrated by the Right Reverend Ozi W. Whitaker on 21 January 1892. In the late 20th century demographic turnover in Kensington saw the congregation's decline, and the parish was closed in 2006 and demolished a decade later.
The 1889 church featured a burial vault for members. It was used to temporarily hold the remains of members that were being buried at other cemeteries, or when the ground was too frozen to open a grave. Many burials listed in obituaries and records as being made here were most likely intended to be nothing more than temporary, and most if not all final interments occurred elsewhere.
