Add PhotosThe Steuben County Infirmary, which was later called the Steuben County Rest Home, started as a white wood frame house in 1863. In 1884 the county built a two-story brick house, and the residents moved into the home in 1885. It was located on the County Farm which was on County Road 200W near the present day 350 exit of I 69. It closed in 1999 and was demolished April 2, 2019.
The Infirmary Cemetery was down the road from the Steuben County Infirmary on the east shore of Crooked Lake. It no longer exists today. In 1938 the Steuben County Planning board voted to extend the Sowle Settlement Road, and make a new and improved 2 lane divided highway into the Steuben County 4-H Park. They buried the stones that marked the graves, leveled the graves and built the road. This information came from the Steuben Republican, May 18, 1938. In the November 6, 1907 Steuben Republican, it stated there were already over 40 people buried in the Infirmary Cemetery. They quit burying in this cemetery in the 1920s.
Research to find who was buried in this cemetery was done by Jean Ann Knight Childers and Cheryl Pocock Gleason as there was no list of people buried there. The research is still ongoing.
The Steuben County Rest Home building was located in Pleasant Township at latitude 41.666591, longitude -85.027951. The cemetery map location is approximate.
