This cemetery is run by the city of Berlin, in this case by the district of Berlin-Pankow. Originally opened in 1908 as a burial place for the dead of nearby hospitals, whose family would not claim the deceased. It then became the municipal cemetery for the village of Buch. Incorporated into Berlin in 1920 the administration of Berlin-Pankow took over ownership. 183 soldiers from WW I found their final resting place here, and another war grave section from WW II (Ehrenhain) contains the graves of 1579 victims of terror and persecution under the Nazi regime. The cemetery directly borders the German State of Brandenburg, just beyond the city line. It has a size of about 143.000 m² or 35 acres, of which 2 acres are now no longer used as part of the cemetery.
There are several numbered cemeteries in Berlin-Pankow, they are differentiated by Roman Numerals I-XII (1-12).
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (15-20 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period, the duration can be extended by another 15-20 years. Otherwise, the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker then used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also, the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it indefinitely.
