Add PhotosThe cemetery is named for Joab Jonah Friend (1821-1901) who with his wife Amy "Emma"
(Sines) Friend (1828-1892) purchased their Grimes Point farm in 1873 from his father Andrew Coleman Friend and older brother Joshua Monroe Friend. Joab and Amy lived out their lives there and rest in the cemetery on their former farm.
The first person buried in the cemetery was their son Horace G. Friend, who died at age 6 on July 27, 1879. Family lore suggests that his mother Amy picked the spot for his burial and that his father Joab planted a row of long needled pines to shelter the field. In addition to Horace, several of Joab and Amy's other children and their spouses are buried here.
The cemetery is listed on page 79 in "Maryland's Garrett County Graves, Volume II - Compiled by Youghiogheny Glades Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Oakland, Maryland, 2004." Contributed by Ronn E. Friend, great-grandnephew of Joab Jonah Friend.
