It is believed that the first Quaker meeting House in Plymouth was a thatched building built in Sussex Street. In 1674 a new meeting House was built in Bilbury Street with a burial ground nearby. Over time the street name was changed to Treville Street.
The area was severely damaged during WW2. The meeting House was by this time used by the Plymouth Labour Exchange and gradually was left isolated as more unsafe buildings were demolished.
In 1953 the graves were removed in order to build Bretonside Bus Station and were re-interred in a section of Efford cemetery. A brand new road was built called Exeter Road between St Andrews's Church and the Charles St roundabout.
The Bus Station was closed in 2016 and demolished.
During demolition work a coffin was discovered from the old Quaker cemetery. It was buried much deeper than most had been and was lead lined. The remains were identified as being those of Elizabeth Cookworthy buried in 1833. Another person was also found but could not be identified. Elizabeth and the unknown were re-buried at Efford in February 2018.
