Add PhotosThe Manor House was named after the local American Indian's tribe great ancestral Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas.
In 1635, this land became part of a land grant made by England's King Charles I to the Italian Richard Eggleston. The great-granddaughter of Mr. Eggleston married Richard Taliaferro (1705-1799), Virginia architect and planter. About 1735, the Georgian-style house was built on a large tract of land by Richard who spent most of his adult life here. Upon his death, Richard's son and daughter-in-law, Richard, Jr. and Rebecca, inherited the property. They raised ten children in the manor house. Rebecca survived her husband and lived here until her passing in 1810. Powhatan Plantation was sold at that time.
Today, The Manor is nestled among 256-acres of beautiful woodland in the Historic Powhatan Resort owned by Diamond Resorts International. The historic site is privately owned and not opened to the public. It is opened only to guests staying at the resort.
