Thunderhole Burial Site
Globe, Caldwell County, North Carolina, USA
Take Thunderhole Road (a Forest Service Road) 2.4 miles off of Globe/Blowing Rock Road to a Forest Service gate just before the cement bottom ford in China Creek. Park car, walk past gate, wade across creek, and go one half mile. At about 90 yards PAST where Thunderhole Creek runs under a culvert look for the two following clues: At this point, you will see a deep RIGHT hand curve. A narrow pull-off is on the right as you walk into that curve.
Directly across from this pull-off and curve is an almost undetectable old road bed that goes slightly downhill to the LEFT of said curve. Proceed 200 or so feet down a very slight slope. A steep bank is observed about 30 yards to the left that drops off into a narrow flat area next to the creek. Stay parallel to that drop-off, staying on the higher part of your ridge and you should run into a single burial plot FRAMED by four nearly rotten small logs. They clearly outline a rectangle containing the sunken-in grave of an adult. There are no stones or markers. This burial is documented in the Collettsville Cemetery Book in 2006. The book says: "Burials." I could not discern another burial near the one described, but there may be others not obvious, including a spot where it looks like someone dug a hole in the past and piled dirt from the hole on its rim. This spot is no more than thirty feet from the known grave. Bo Cash, Nebo, NC 9-8-2020
