Fort de Chartres was a French fort, built on the east bank of the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois. It is located about four miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The first fort was built in 1718-1720, by French soldiers from New Orleans. Due to flooding, it was rebuilt two more times.

The first fort only lasted five years and construction on a new fort began in 1825. Both of the first two forts were built of wood. The second fort lasted until 1747, although it was in bad repair by that time.

The third fort was built of stone and was built 1753-1754. However, the Mississippi River continued to flood and the fort was eventually abandoned. By 1772, it was falling into the river. By 1906, the only part of the fort still somewhat standing, was the powder magazine.

The stone fort has been reconstructed and is a US National Historic Landmark and Illinois State Historic Site.

Memorials for all three stages of the fort belong in this cemetery.
