Located on land donated by Paul Octave Hebert, a former Governor of Louisiana, St. Paul's Catholic Church was constructed on North Main Street of Bayou Goula, now known as Highway 405, in 1870. Its locality was ideal, as it was positioned in the heart of Bayou Goula's commercial district. The church actively served the community until a devastating storm warranted the necessary construction of a levee in 1929. As the church was located along the bank of the Mississippi River, a quick relocation of the cemetery plots were necessary, provided families could afford to quickly move the caskets of their loved ones. Plots were donated by the neighboring Catholic Church Cemetery, but an unconfirmed number of caskets remained buried on the site, and were absorbed into the levee, as the church was moved backward, into the footprint of the cemetery.
A concerted effort was made to refurbish the Church building, in 2009, and it serves as a church today. It is believed that the current location of the church sits on top of the existing cemetery.
