Add PhotosOn Monday, April 15, 2002, and on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, DON LANE, PAUL ADDINGTON, LINDA QUILLEN, STEVE and NANCY COTTINGHAM, TOM and CHRISTINE STREET, and DELMAR FRAYSIER worked at a Quillen cemetery located on the old Greenberry Compton farm on Route 619 in Scott County.
It is located on west side of Rt 619 (old Gate City - Ft Blackmore Road) midway between Hwy 71 and the Copper Creek Bridge. The cemetery is accessible by a farm road on the south side of a now closed grocery store. It is located behind the old Greenberry Compton house (he was a grandson of MARTIN BIRD QUILLEN.)
A thicket had to be cleared in order to locate graves. Most of the tombstones had been knocked over, and many were broken. The cemetery was very overgrown with blackberry vines, rose vines, and grape vines. Large trees had fallen across the cemetery. Several patches of the thicket were not cleared, so other tombstones are possibly there. The uncleared part of the cemetery in Apr 2002 is thickly covered with rose and blackberry briars. There are thought to be several graves in the uncleared section with field stone markers. A small portion in the southeast corner of the cemetery at one time had a chain link fence and a few posts are still standing but the wire is gone. This fenced section may have been called the Reed Cemetery.
About 8 graves marked with uncarved stones
Two matching metal tombstones; one was upright, the other was face down. Instead of being inscribed, information was under glass. Glass and information was gone from one of the markers. The glass was cracked, and only the dates were readable on the other.
