Son of Daniel Martin and Rebecca English. Born in White Co, Tennessee. He held many prestigious positions in Conway and Faulkner Co, including mayor, Arkansas House of Representatives, and elected to the city council, school board, and many others.
The grave of Captain W W Martin is located on the southwest corner of the Hendrix College campus in Conway. In 1911, he was buried in Martinsville Cemetery in northern Faulkner Co, but was reinterred to its present location. A five-ton boulder was placed on the grave in 1937.
Captain Martin was the driving force behind the establishment of Hendrix College. Over the years, he had contributed about $75,000 (1890-1911) to the college. During the Civil War, Captain Martin joined the Confederate States and served in the Quitman Rifles of the 10th Arkansas Regiment. He was quickly promoted to the rank of captain.
Although he never married and had no children, it was said many times that Captain Martin's "children" were the young people who were able to obtain an education through is generosity and leadership.
Inscription: "As a soldier, business man, mayor, citizen, philanthropist, and churchman, Captain Martin was a pioneer and a leader of men. His investment of time, thought and money in Hendrix College has multiplied itself a thousand-fold and will share for all time in the contributions of the college to human welfare."
