Although the Cholera epidemic reached New York by 1832, this Cholera hospital was the first one formed in Manhattan by using a schoolhouse, Jun 1849. The second was at 13th St, the third was at Stanton St, and the fourth was at 35th St.

It appears the victims were being buried behind the schools and referred to as a Potter's grave, or Potter's Field. Only the few survivors were sent to Centre St Hospital at the close of the epidemic.
