Letters from Van Norman relatives refer to a visit in the 1890s to the family burying ground, near a chapel or school house located at the foot of Walkers Line at Lakeshore Road.
All evidence of the burying ground had disappeared until 1971 when excavation for a swimming pool at a private residence unearthed several gravestones about 5 feet below the surface. The owner of the property reported that "the [pool] excavation didn't go that deep in the shallow end, so more bones could be under there." Unfortunately, work crews had already hauled away two truck loads of fill before anyone noticed the headstones.
In August 1989 the Hamilton Spectator reported the discovery of a human skull just across the street by workers laying a sewer pipe. However, the regulator of Ontario Cemeteries felt that the discovery of one skull wasn't enough to justify the expense involved in an archeological search.
The headstones uncovered in 1971 were embedded in concrete on the swimming pool deck. Among them was the headstone for Elizabeth Van Norman, the wife of Ephraim Van Norman. Other stones found commemorated John Mc and Abel, infant sons of Thomas and Mary (nee Felwellan) Lucas, and their infant grand-daughter Sarah E. The Lucas infants were great-grandsons and a great-great-granddaughter of Robert Land, the original settler of what was to become Barton Township and the City of Hamilton.
The four memorials listed here represent the burials associated with the above referenced headstones.
