Sanchez-White Cemetery
Trenton, Gilchrist County, Florida, USA
[Note: Do not confuse the above site with the newer second location for the Union Baptist Church, which can be reached from Trenton by driving east on SR 26 for ~ 7 ¾ mi to a graded road just before CR 337. Turn north of SR 26 and head ~ ½ miles to reach it.]
In the "History of Harmony Baptist Association" Union Baptist Church is mentioned as one of those sending delegates to the original convention marking the founding of the Association on 31 Oct 1879. Those chosen were Leroy Wood and Ira (Judson) Carter. Ira was selected as the clerk temporary of the convention, and then appointed clerk for the ensuing year.
Lizzie Mae (Jones) Watson stated to me that the building next to the Sanchez-White Cemetery was an old wooden structure called Union Church, and remembers seeing it in ruins many decades ago.
During the date of my survey on 1 Mar 2009, the Cemetery was abandoned and overgrown with scrub brush and trees, some of which had fallen in on the gravemarkers. It was fully enclosed by an old fence. There were a fair number of rattlesnakes reported as living on site. Only a few visible gravestones remained. There are five small gravestones without any legible markings. There were also three large gravestones present, and another which was missing all but the base. Jim White stated to me that his grandmother, a wife of W.H. White, is also buried there.
