Also known as County Poor Farm Cemetery
Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan, USA
The map location is approximate.
The Lapeer County Poor Farm came to be because of the 1830 Michigan law which required each county to have a poor house. The purpose was to help those who were in need, lacking living quarters or unable to support themselves. These individuals were housed in the "County House" and worked on the "County Poor Farm", if they were physically able.
This facility was an 80 acre farm that evolved into 139+ acres. Over the course of it's history it was also known as the "Lapeer County House", "Alms House", and "Infirmary". The farm was in the north east quarter of section 31 in Mayfield Township, Lapeer County, Michigan. When the welfare system arose, the poor farms changed from a home for poor people to a place for people who needed continual medical care. Some of the Lapeer property still is used for government agencies and is home for many adults in the "Lapeer County Medical Care Facility".
During it's "County Poor Farm" era, some residence found their finally resting place in this property's cemetery.
Note: This was a separate facility from the state funded "Michigan Home for the Feeble Minded and Epileptic", aka "Michigan Home and Training School", aka "Oakdale Regional Center", in Lapeer, Michigan.
