They tell of the Virtues of Long-dead Riverhead people - Have Stood for 150 years
Burial place adjoins the M. E. Church and is maintained by descendants of old families
Special to the Eagle
Riverhead, L. I., May 23 - Tucked away in one corner of the Methodist grounds here are the remnants of what was once a good sized burying ground, but now there remain only a few graves, for many of the bodies once interred there have been taken up and placed elsewhere. The remaining few will
probably stay where they are for years to come, as the plots are now being well cared for after longs years of neglect.
Under the few mounds left are the ashes of those who were once Riverhead's prominent residents. In fact, some of the graves have been there from a period before there was a
Riverhead town.
Some of the mounds are without stones, and over others are monuments that have stood for 150 years, and are still in good condition. These old stones are quaint as to design and lettering, and some of the inscriptions have been nearly wiped out by the ravages of time.
In all, there are 34 mounds in the little cemetery, and the largest number from one family is that of the Jagger family. This plot is fenced in separately. The place is
well kept up by descendants of the Jaggers. There are 12 graves in the inclosure. Those outside are scattering, and as the last of the families are gone, the graves have been
nearly forgotten. The last burial in the place was made in 1884; the earliest was 1740, that of Mr. William Wallburton.
In the Jagger inclosure are also buried some of the Griffing family.
