Add PhotosThe cemetery has been abandoned and is believed to have been a family cemetery used by the Ward family when they owned the property back in the late 1800s. The Brown County cemetery book says there are a total of five graves in the cemetery. One that is marked with a Civil War headstone for PVT Leander Ward and four graves that are marked with field stones. When the entry for PVT Ward was made in June of 2015 there were no other stones except his. Any evidence of other graves at this location are gone. It was believed that the other graves were family members that died of Typhoid fever from a tainted well.
Description from the Brown County Cemetery Book is as follows:
Pikes Peak Cemetery, Van Buren Township, Brown County, Indiana
Recorded December 1, 1971
Location: NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Section 13; Township 8N; Range 3E.
This small abandoned family burial plot is on a hillside about 420 feet from the county road, directly north of the Pikes peak store, on the James Wilkerson Place (1976). The land was probably owned by the Ward Family, early storekeepers at Pikes Peak. There are about four graves marked only with fieldstones near the one gravestone here listed.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 2, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (01 April 2006), gives the primary cemetery name as Pikes Peak Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-07-65 (Pikes Peak / Ward).
