On 30 January 1838, William Tilliard, Jr. and a companion took down monumental inscriptions from within this church.
Titled "Copies of Inscriptions on the Monuments and Tomb Stones in the French Church Norwich, Arranged in Order of Dates," it amounts to only two brief pages, but the pages are vital to the history of the Huguenots and Walloons of Norwich.
As both 'Dissenters' and French-speakers, records for the members of this church are not available anywhere else. The recorded memorials provide not only vital dates, but relationship information as well. All but one entry, (likely that of a child, for it simply reads "1805. E.B."), have been added here.
Tilliard arranged his record in chronological order; the first date is 29 May 1729, the last is 30 Jan 1829. He notes some vault interments, but doesn't otherwise clarify if his entries were memorial tablets or tombstones. Either way, it begs the question:
WHERE ARE THESE GRAVES NOW?
The medieval fell out of use at the Reformation and served thereafter as a cloth hall in 1564. In 1637 it was granted to the Walloon Company for use as a French-language, Protestant church. The last deacon of the French Protestant church was Peter M. Martineau.
In the 1830s, it was used by Swedenborgians and, later, by Apostolic Christians until the 1950s when it became a furniture warehouse.
Were there burials made within the church? Two facts suggest the latter possibility: 1. Tilliard's used of the phrase "Tomb Stones," 2. the more recent (1856) wall memorial to the Martineau family which, after naming five of its members, reads "THE ABOVE WERE ALL BURIED IN THIS CHURCH."
(You can see a recent image of the 1856 Martineau memorial by clicking on the above embedded link; a transcription of it is posted on their individual memorials. A 1857 description of this church and the Martineau memorial can be found on pages 178-179 of "Fletcher's Norwich Hand-Book, Compiled by Mrs. Madders," available free online.)
