Located on the north side of County Road 60 in the Town of Chemung, Chemung County, NY, previously known as the Elmira to Waverly Highway or Old Route 17. It is located 6/10th of a mile west of the center of Chemung proper and 1/10th of a mile from the intersection of County Rd #60 and Wynkoop Creek Rd. (County Rd. #3).
The land was originally part of the Daniel McDowell Farm, Lot #4 of the 1788 Case Map of the Town of Chemung. The first known burial was that of Sally Drake, daughter of Jonathan and Mary, in 1810 on their property. The family burial ground was the beginning of the Drake Cemetery.
In 1931-32 a transcription was made of the cemetery by Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Staver at the request of the D.A.R. Another transcription was done in 1935 by C.W. Northrop. A third transcription was made in 1974 by Miss Isabel Ridall and Joseph C. and Doris Boyd.
In 2017, a fourth transcription is currently being done by the town historian and a group of volunteers. Preservation of the cemetery is currently underway with new graves being discovered and notated on Find-a-grave as they become available. Watch for improvements through 2018 when we hope to see completion. The Drake Cemetery is property of the Town of Chemung.
