Charlie Wright told James Taylor Adams that Old Pete, a Negro slave owned by the Sowards was buried here and that in fact, Old Pete probably cleared the land for the cemetery.
I have honored Old Pete by listing him as buried here and gave him the last name of Sowards.
I found this cemetery quite by accident while searching for the Mart Wright Cemetery.
This cemetery is located on a high knoll surrounded by pine trees. Across from the Wildcat Gas station in Pound, turn onto Rufus Strange Road. Go straight up the hill and keep straight to the first house beside the road on the right, presently occupied by Langley McCoy. You will need to park. If you look to your left up in the cow pasture, you will see a grove of pine trees. The cemetery is at the top of that knoll. It is a pretty good walk up the hill. I could have driven most of the way up with 4-wheel drive if the ground had been dry.
The cemetery is in very bad shape. I could only identify 2 graves with marked stones but counted many graves marked with field stones and many sunken places that appeared to be graves.
I visited this cemetery on Jan. 2, 2015.
