Add PhotosDuring the onset of the Civil War, the camp, along with Camp Johnston, was established as a temporary Confederate training camp. In December 1862, after Camp Campbell was no longer a training camp & was instead used to guard the area between Kinston & New Bern, the First Battle of Kinston took place around Camp Campbell.
The battle was part of the Goldsboro Expedition of the Civil War. Brig. Gen. John G. Foster & the Department of North Carolina, 1st Division (Union) against Brig. Gen. Nathan G. Evan's brigade (Confederate). The 8th NC Regiment occupied Camp Campbell at this time. The First Battle of Kinston resulted in a Union victory.
Soldiers who died at Camp Campbell were buried in a mass grave located somewhere in the camp. It is not known how many were buried in the grave or where exactly this mass grave was. The name of only one person interred in the grave is known: CPL Martin L. Anderson.
