The cemetery is in a rural setting, on posted land, owned by Louisiana State University (LSU). It is located on the site of the former Hollywood Plantation. The cemetery is primarily situated within a flat, rectangular mound (almost 2,000 square feet in area), which is about 30 inches higher than the surrounding land. It is surrounded by an 8-foot-high cyclone fence, thanks to LSU; is regularly mowed (with permission from LSU); and there are Crepe Myrtle trees encircling the area inside the fence. The trees are approximately 15 years old.
Tragically, the cemetery has not always been properly cared for, as it has been by LSU for the last 20 years or so. Human activity decades ago resulted in displacement of grave cover slabs, markers, and monuments. Several broken and displaced slabs, monument pieces, and stones are stacked around, and on top of, the large brick tomb at the center, south end. Extensive research has been completed to determine who was buried here. Eight (8) individuals are certain to be here. There may be a dozen or more. Engraved names on gravestone remnants total only six (6) individuals, so far. It is not possible to know where the disheveled markers should permanently reside.
A non-profit organization, Hollywood Plantation Cemeteries Association (HPCA), has been formed. The goals of this group are to secure the site, restore the graves and site as much as practical, and to possibly provide perpetual maintenance through a trust not yet formed.
