Old Baptist Burial Ground
Walcot, Bath and North East Somerset Unitary Authority, Somerset, England
The plot was part of a larger plot which the church had divided in 1762, when the western part (on Lyncombe Hill) was sold for the erection of two houses (one of which was later known as Southcot House); these plots now stand on the N.E. corner of the intersection of Lyncombe Hill with Forefield Place, about 200 metres south-east from Claverton Street (the A36).
Registers prior to 1785 have not survived; since that year, 480 burials were recorded in a Register Book of Baptisms & Burials which was surrendered in 1837 to the Registrar-General.
There are said to be no remaining traces of the old ground; it was superceded in about 1812 by a larger ground, near the S.E. corner of Lyncombe Hill & Claverton Street; that ground is the one now preserved by the Bath Historical Trust.
It is not immediately clear from the Register which burials after 1812 took place in the new ground, or in the remaining spaces in family plots in the old ground.
See "Baptist Burial Grounds in Bath," by Kerry J. BIRCH, in the Baptist Quarterly, Vol.37, 1997, at pp. 20-32.
