On October 20, 1891, the United Order of Odd Fellows purchased land from James & Elizabeth Burton for the sum of $1,050. The land located in Military Heights was used to bury blacks in North Little Rock until the late 1950's. The Military Heights area was a poor black neighborhood with no paved roads. On December 11, 1943, the Argenta Lodge #2197 of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows sold the cemetery to E. S. Hubble for the sum of $500 who continued to operate and maintain the cemetery for 17 years. On October 14, 1960, Freeway Development, Inc. purchased the land still known as the Odd Fellows Cemetery from H. H. and Mary Hubble for the price of $5400 for the purpose of building a motel directly on the site.
In December 1960, the Marche Cemetery Association was incorporated for the purpose of owning, operating and maintaining Gabriel Heights Memorial Gardens, a cemetery for human colored beings. Gabriel Heights is located in Marche near the Morgan exit on I-40.
After several injunctions, work stopped further removal of bodies until relatives could make specific requests for grave space in Haven of Rest Cemetery.
In the end, the bodies supposedly went to Gabriel Heights Memorial Gardens a virtually unheard of cemetery that was closed in 1998 because it was not being maintained. If people were buried there are no tombstones to identify where people were buried. Many people believe there was no reburial but bodies were dumped somewhere else.
