Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is an English Gothic building built from 1867-1873 of Iowa limestone from a design by Edward Tuckerman Potter. The spire and bell tower were not completed at that time due to lack of funds. It was consecrated as Grace Cathedral in 1873 by Rev. Henry Washington Lee, the first Episcopal Bishop of Iowa. In 1910, Trinity Parish merged with Grace Cathedral, and the name was changed to Trinity Cathedral. In 1998, over 130 years after the cornerstone was laid, the 131 foot spire and bell tower were finally completed thanks to a monetary donation by parishioner Elizabeth Haines. Since 1992, when the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul in Des Moines was named the liturgical cathedral, Trinity has been the historical cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa.
