Add PhotosIn the spring of 1874, a group of French Canadians arrived in Adams County by railroad. The group had originally come from Quebec Provence Canada to Christian County, Illinois. The low-lying, humid climate there had made many of them ill, so they came west to find a healthier climate.
Included in the families were those of Xavier and Mary LaBrie, Pierre and Delina (Provencher) Bergeron, Eleazer and Mrs. Paris, P. Z. Gauvreau, and Mrs. Eleanor Guilmette.
The first burial in the cemetery was that of Joseph Bergeron, the 22-year-old son of Peter and Delina Bergeron. He died from lung disease shortly after the group arrived in Adams County.
Joseph was ill for several weeks and during that time the circuit priest from Crete, Nebraska administered the Last Rites. But there was no priest in the area to officiate at the burial services. The coffin was made by ripping floorboards from the upstairs of the newly-built Provencher home. The land belonged to Joseph Provencher, brother of Delina Bergeron, and the only person in the group who owned his land. The others were homesteaders.
The cemetery was used for only a few years. As the area became more settled a cemetery was established in Hastings.
