Add PhotosIn 1952, Clark Siebel wrote: "A little cemetery is located about one quarter of a mile east of old Gainesville, it is the burial place of some of the early settlers of Gainesville and Central City. Today this little cemetery contains the fragments of thirteen gravestones, I pieced these fragments together and photographed them to get their inscriptions complete."
While his photographs are not available, the transcribed inscriptions on page 11 of his book were used to create the memorials.
Siebel continues: "It is very possible that a number of persons were buried here in unmarked graves, for a gravestone was possibly a luxury at that time, for they had to be transported great distances to be used here, for one of the gravestones is inscribed, "Bloomington, Illinois."
"The little cemetery is situated on a hill in a grove of oak trees quite close to crooked creek, I remember it when some of the gravestones were standing upright, but it has been uncared for for many years, so that some of the ol gravestones were sunken below the ground and had to be dug up, so that I could read and examine them."
