"The Oaks" plantation homeplace, originally the headquarters of a vast 1,491-acre plantation of fertile farm and forest land, was built along the west side of Baskerville Mill Road (present-day Virginia State Highway Route 610) and the south bank of Nottoway River, between Baskerville in Nottoway County and Rawlings in Brunswick County. To place 1,491 acres in perspective, "The Oaks" plantation encompassed more than 2 square miles of territory!
Specifically, "The Oaks" plantation home formerly stood about .1 (1/10) mile south-southwest of Baskerville Mill bridge-crossing of the Nottoway River (Hickory Run area). Nottoway River forms the county boundary line between the southern portion of Nottoway County and the northern portion of Brunswick County, Virginia. In 1985, "The Oaks" plantation home, built circa 1820, was demolished after many years of deterioration.
Additionally, to help orient those interested, but unfamiliar, with this very northern area of Brunswick County, Virginia, "The Oaks" plantation homesite and Francis Jones Family Cemetery are located about 1 mile south of Baskerville, Nottoway County, Virginia and 3 miles north-northeast of Rawlings, Brunswick County, Virginia. For a period of time, this same area was officially designated as "Saint Andrews Parish", as recorded in the 1860 United States Decennial Census.
Finally, in a much broader sense, Brunswick County is geographically situated in southeastern Virginia. The southern border of Brunswick County also constitutes part of the state boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina.
