McGowan-Bracey Cemetery
Hinds County, Mississippi, USA
Road in the woods. Appoximate GPS coordinates 32 deg 12' 46" N by 90 deg 20' 44" W.
This little cemetery, in bad condition, as of 1971, is thought to be the only or very rare vestige of an ante-bellum plantation called "Spring Ridge" that occupied the surrounding lands.
It was the home site of Hugh McGowen (1799-1857), his wife Gabriella Bracey McGowan (1810-1861), daughter of Merry Bracey (1781-1840) and his wife Elcie (Alice) Moore Bracey (1787-1835). Little is known of the division and settlement of the plantation, except for its surviving name, since all or most of the immediate family were dead and buried here before the civil war, which caused a division and scattering of lands in the Reconstruction era following it.
Gabriella's father Merry Bracey was not a full time resident of this area, having been a worker with his father in three Mississippi counties, and administering estate lands with at least three plantations in South Carolina. Merry Bracey (1781-1840) was an officer in the courts of Marian, and Hinds Counties, in Mississippi.
It was of interest to read a little of the history of the Spring Ridge plantation, then to seek out its location and to find that the plantation name apparently grew into the name of the nearby village and town. This happened in many other places in the old Southland.
It was also of interest to notice, in 1971, the Spring Ridge water tank, sitting on a hill, apparently reminiscent of the spring giving the plantation its name, and in later years to return to the area and see a much more massive water tank, now a part of the Southwest Jackson Water Division. Apparently, the old spring was a good producer.
Cemetery inscriptions are partly taken from physical evidence in 1971, and from the records of the Mississippi Genealogical Society. Spring Ridge history came from the records and DAR information of Aimee McGowen Allen, Biloxi, Mississippi, descendant of Hugh McGowan (1799-1857) and Gabriella Bracey McGowen (1810-1861).
