Laurel Hill Settlement Graveyard
Cambria County, Pennsylvania, USA
This was originally settled by Edenborough Smith (1765-1865) and William Harshberber. Edinborough Smith was a Revolutionary War Veteran, who was a Black teamster with Gen. George Washington at the Yorktown Surrender. He has been a slave from either VA or WV.
William Harshbarger, also Black, (1765-1832), from Lancaster County, PA, also settled here. This farm was populated by free Blacks, and is thought to be a stop on the Underground Railroad.
There are two readable stones here, and many fieldstones and unmarked graves. Lisa states there were many wooden crosses in one section 30 years ago. The cemetery will need to be "reconstructed" based on histories and obits.
Research continues on these families, primarily by Elaine Adams and Lisa Cicacia. See wonderful photos of the family and the farm: http://cambriahistory.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
