Cox Still Cemetery
Adel, Cook County, Georgia, USA
This abandoned cemetery is located east of the Cox Adel on GA Highway 37, crossing Bear Creek Bridge,a and passing the pond which lies a couple of hundred yars east on the left. Just beyond the pond is Cox Still Road. Turn left and proceed a few hundred yards; a road to the right leads back to a dead end. The property at the end of the road is still owned by descendants of original woods workers who were employed by the Cox brothers. The cemetery is overgrown in adjacent woods. It can be reached from the WBIT Radio Station by going North by northwest. Of all burials in this cemetery, the names of only 71 have been document.
According to Ensley, names and dates were obtained from Cook County Probate Office. Note: Death records for Cook and Berrien Counties have only been kept since 1919. This cemetery contains no headstones or markers.
Mrs. Rolina Mae Copeland [Cokley] Jackson wrote a short history of Cox Still Cem as the buring place for the turpentine works of the Cox Still. The Cox brothers recruited Negroes from North and South Carolina to work the turpentine Still known as Cox Still. No one has been buried in this cemetery since the mid-1940's.
