William Buchanan Douglas was born on 4 January 1815 on his family's plantation near Pattonsburg, Botetourt County,Virginia. He was the first son of John B. and Catherine Sence Douglas. He grew up and received a private education on the family plantation . His father died when he was just fifteen years old, leaving William with a substantial inheritance.
He married Catherine Fulwiler on 14 June 1841 in Botetourt County, and they had four children: Catherine, John W., Gustanza and Evaline. In late 1846 William arrived in Warren County, Kentucky, with four small children but without a wife. Apparently Catherine died shortly before the move to Kentucky . With his second wife, he had eleven children: James Thomas, Elizabeth Ann, Mary Jane, William Jr., Malvinia Frances, Jessee H., Julia, Virginia B., Steven Arnold, Martha and Hattie. Many descendants of these children still live in the Warren county area today.
