Harris Cemetery
Cainsville, Wilson County, Tennessee, USA
This cemetery is the burial place of Mr. Adams' father, Edward Spencer Adams, and first wife, Mary Jane Lenning.
The 1979 transcription is listed as "Cemetery: Adams, Lenning, Harris, Gunn & Tubb", which describes every surname transcribed except "Knight". In the absence of a locally recognized cemetery name, and in the convention of naming for the oldest identified burial, "Harris" is selected for this listing.
It is possible that this is also the Gunn Cemetery transcribed by Henry Ford Cutrell in the same time frame of the early 1980s. However, his transcription listed two names only, while Adams records stones and burials both earlier and later. Or, it may be that the cemeteries are in proximity, only one being recorded by Cutrell but both being combined by Adams.
The following description is excerpted from Adams' 1979 transcription:
There are 7 rows of graves with about 24 graves to each row. Just stones have been set up in the middle of the plot.
Information related by Mrs. Ellen James
[whose son-in-law is buried here], ca. 80 years of age ca. 1915 (born ca. 1835) this burial plot was once a camp ground called "Mount Moriah."
Directions are difficult to follow 34 years later, so MAP IS APPROXIMATE, location not verified as of May 2013: ...located on the Oregon Road between the S. H. Craddock and Sam Harris farms, about 2 miles from Cainsville and Lofton black top road. Going south toward Lofton, turn left at the second road left go about 300 yards in center of field on right. In 1920 this was a public road leading to Greenvale.
For comparison, Cutrell's directions to the Gunn Cemetery are: ...about 2 1/2 miles east of Cainsville Rd. & about 1/4 mile north of Oregon Rd. on east side of branch & Rd. not shown on map.
