From the intersection of TN-59 & US-79 in Mason, go northwest on TN-59 for 0.8 mi. On the hilltop on the east (right) side of the road in a small clump of trees is the Old Sharon Cemetery (first cemetery in the area). In 1833 an acre was donated here for a Methodist meeting house. The church was called Sharon & the church yard was the community burying ground and old-timers said there were as many as two hundred people buried here. The whites on one side of the church and the slaves on the other. Sadly, only pieces of about a dozen stones remain with the earliest dating to 1836. In the late 1840s, the church moved about a mile north and the church here was given to the slaves for their use. Post-Civil War deeds refer to it as the "African Church" and say it was burned during the war by Federal troops. (summary by John Marshall)
