The US Army built Ft Townsend in 1856 during the 1855-56 Treaty Conflict to defend settlers from native attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1859 when the military transferred troops to Camp San Juan during a dispute with Great Britain over ownership of the San Juan Islands. Fort Townsend was reactivated in 1874 and decommissioned again in 1894.
Identifiable burials were transferred to the San Francisco National Cemetery.
