Researched 15 Nov 1995 by Audrey Rankin and Fred McKinzie.
The original Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and Cemetery is said to have been located in back of the old Hickory Hill business section on a site later occupied by the Bobby White residence. From there it was moved to its present location sometime around the turn of the century.
The original Mt. Moriah cemetery is located on the Liberty Road on the present Langston Bolton place. It does not seem that the church was ever located adjacent to the cemetery although it could have been for a short time.
Some time just prior to the 1920's, a new cemetery was begun on old Linden road just outside the then city limits. The first Mt. Moriah Baptist Church was built about the same time. It is the same building that was destroyed by the tornado of 1921. A second building was constructed on the same site and stood until the late 1950's when it was torn down and replaced by the present church.
The Mt. Moriah Church and cemetery became the nucleus of the local Black Community which soon added a Masonic Lodge and School.
