Marshall H. and Maria (Richmond) Edson sold this property to Silas Payne in March 1867. They reserved a piece "12 feet by 24 feet for a burial ground enclosed by a board fence." Marshall, as the highest bidder, had acquired the estate of his father, Levi Edson, on 12 Aug. 1845.
This burial ground has been reserved to the Edson family in all the deeds for this land since then.
A few gravestones, probably broken, used to lean against the stone wall behind the house. In 1986 there were "four stones laid flat on the ground within a low ledge, possibly removed from the original burying place" described by a direct descendant of Ernest Barnes, a former owner of the property, as "two average size marble stones and two small marble stones." These stones are no longer there. They may have been two headstones and two footstones.
In May 2007, while clearing brush in her horse pasture, the present owner of this property discovered two gravestones lying face down under several inches of soil. They were the headstone (in two pieces with the inscription in perfect condition) and the footstone for Levi Edson.
