Fort Lincoln Military Post Cemetery

Fort Lincoln was established in 1861 as a temporary retreat from Confederate troops advancing on the soldiers and citizens at Fort Scott. Fort Lincoln served as a prisoner of war camp in 1862, was abandoned in 1863 and destroyed by Confederate troops in 1864. Graves of military personnel buried at Fort Lincoln were moved to Fort Scott National Cemetery, but graves of civilians who lived at the adjoining town at Fort Lincoln were left intact.
