Add PhotosCemetery name after Dr Smith for his house was near by and land was part of his wife's Smith/Rhodes/Bass property. This is the Family's cemetery and interment of (Lambert, Herring, Dail, Martin, McNamara, Smith). It may be lost or not found as we wait on any help with GPS coordinates.
"My quest now given to know, where are these family sacred grounds or where did it move?"
History:
British Lt General Cornwallis came through the county in 1781, much damage was done to the properties after the American Revolution war, but the American people rebuilt and some went further inland. It is not sure if there was damage to the family cemetery or if there are more burial records before the burial in 1834 of Dir. Smith at this location. His father died there a few years earlier 1831, but he was not noted as being buried there as I only assume...
Uncertain Location:
GPS Coordinates added are not proven, visual verification, or more detail plot maps are needed to find the once owned family property and remains of the cemetery. Here is the story based on records from a book on burial inscription:
The road directions below are also from older road maps before the college roads etc. and therefor they do not line up with Mt Olive city today.
(Burrial grounds are about (one fourth mile) west of State road near the site of Dr. Stephen Smith's home. The="" old="" house="" burned="" down="" several="" years="" ago.)=""
Once in time with a bird's eye view, this old cemetery was located on State Road about three miles northwest of Mt. Olive town. The Smith owned (Bass-Rhodes-Hatch-Kornegay) family's plantations vary one called "Vernon". Deeds proof here: http://www.jbquinn.net/Family_History/Books/JMO/jmo_3.htm
It is possible that Mt Olive College was the Kornegay property that was once Dir. Bass's and then given to his daughter Alice Anna Bass "Rhodes" the wife of General James Rhodes. The property then was given to Sallie Ann Rhodes "Smith" the wife of Dir. Stephen Smith and past on.
Information: I believe the doctor served in the House of Commons from Wayne 1817, 1822, 1783, and was Sheriff of Wayne County, NC for several years.
Doctor's wife is Sally Anne Rhodes "Smith" daughter of General James Rhodes & Anne Bass "Rhodes". Mrs. Smith does not have a marker with his because she is not buried here. She went with and joined with cousins "Kornegay" in Sumter, Alabama with her children our family line.
