Add PhotosThe Sanders Family Cemetery is located on the property once owned by Benjamin & Nancy Ratcliff Sanders. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Lyons and Standish Hill Roads, Weirton, WV (within a mile of the PA border).
The property remained in the Sanders family until 1857 at which time Samuel Sanders, who had inherited this section of his father's property, sold this property to Philip Freshwater.
Howard Standish, a very knowledgeable Sanders researcher, located an 1871 map which noted the Sanders Family Cemetery. In 1991 he visited Carl Zagula (his father bought this property from the Lyons family c. 1920‘s) and Mr. Zagula showed Howard the location of the cemetery.
Mr. Zagula recalled his father was afraid their mule would accidentally plow over the headstones so he planted a ring of trees around the cemetery. He also said James Sanders had "the prettiest" white marble headstone inscribed with his name and the date of his death, September 14, 1848.
Mr. Zagula also recalled that an elderly woman arrived decades earlier also with a copy of the 1871 map and he also showed her the Sanders Cemetery. He said the following spring when he went up to that field for spring planting he found all the headstones had been removed. There are some small fragments remaining of those headstones which were broken off at their bases when removed.
In October 2008 Howard and I visited the site of the Sanders Cemetery. Without Howard's first hand knowledge of the Sanders Family Cemetery through his visit with Mr. Zagula, the Sanders Family Cemetery may have been lost to all since it now appears simply as an overgrown copse of trees in the upper fields.
