Old Twenty Acres Cemetery
Alma, Bacon County, Georgia, USA
It is not known what the original name of this lost cemetery was. The current name comes from the name of the field in which it is located. The last burial in the cemetery was that of Alva Warnock, died 1878, daughter and youngest child of James and Sarah Margaret Kinchen Warnock. Her grave was unmarked but the site was maintained for many years by being surrounded by a rail fence. Sadly this fence disappeared in the 1930s and the exact grave site was lost. All other grave sites had been lost by that time.
The cemetery is located on land that belonged to James Warnock and is still in the possession of the family. In the later 1950s Mrs. Mallie Warnock Pope, grand-daughter of James Warnock and daughter of Eli Warren Warnock, Sr. and Sarah Drucilla Nelson Warnock, pointed out the location of the cemetery. She showed where the road came up the hill from a ford across a branch. She said it was a large cemetery and that black burials were on the north side of the road while the whites were buried on the south side. She said, "Many of my mother's family were buried here." These would have been McClellans and Nelsons.
There is reason to believe that this cemetery was the community cemetery for this section of Bacon County (then Appling County) covering the New Hope, Pine Level, Springfield and Unity Church communities. All known burials in those church cemeteries occurred after the 1878 burial of Alva Warnock. The original location of Pine Level Church was about two miles east of its present site and it was said that there was no cemetery at that site.
