The church was built on William T. Gray's plantation and known as Oak Grove, the chapel served parishioners from 1913 to 1965. A wooden church was constructed in 1913. In 1925, Miss Eliza and Miss Penelope Gray had the brick chapel constructed and named St. Anne's in memory of their mother William Anne Pender Gray. The church was designed by a German architect, a Mr. Koch, who used a Gothic style; the church's brass bell had been made in Philadelphia.
The church, no longer used after the death of the Gray sisters, was deconsecrated by the rector in 1965. The brass bell and the stained glass windows were given to Christ Church in Rocky Mount, but the large stained glass window in memory of Emerelda is in its original position. The pews were given to St. Michael's, another mission church in Tarboro. Unfortunately, the silver cross over the arch was stolen, and the original light fixtures had been broken by vandals.
Today St. Anne's is managed by Kevin Wilson and his wife Trish. They rent out the chapel for small weddings, receptions, reunions, and even to a new congregation who meets there on Sunday mornings.
