Add PhotosThe following is a summary from an article in an unknown publication by Dave Marshall dated November 5, 1987.
In 1985, Mary Rose Steele from Mineola, NY, contacted Dave Marshall in Holmes Co., Ohio to help her determine what had become of her ancestor, Phillip Steele who died in 1828 in Holmes Co., Ohio.
A search of local records led to the discovery that Pillip Steele was buried in the Steele Family Cemetery located on the original property he patented. The Steele Farm was located in the southwest corner of German (now Clark township) along the headwaters of Mill Creek.
The new owner of the property said the cemetery no longer existed but that the varied shades of the grass on the hillside were still evident indicating the location of the original plots. The new owner found many of the headstones along the edge of the field and he had them stored in a corncrib. Most were in excellent condition. One included a large ornate hand carved stone for George Steele, son of Phillip.
In 1986 or 1987, Patricia K. Johnson, descendant of Jacob Steele and president of the Steele Family Reunion, helped organize a collection of almost $400. They convinced the new owner of the property, Delbert Erb, to set aside a small portion of his orchard and reset the stones and fence it in.
