Location: From Darien, US Hwy 17 North, go 1 mile, turn left on Hwy 251. Go 1.3 miles (over I-95) and the Cemetery is on the right behind the service stations. (To the North)
History: This began as a plantation graveyard for slaves. The land was a Crown Grant to Sir Patrick Houstoun in 1757 and remained in the Houstoun family until the late 1790s when John Houstoun died. James Smith and his daughter, who married James Dunwody, owned these rice plantations, Sidon and Hopestill, until after Smith's death in 1856. Local history says that rice was grown until 1900 and later corn was grown on the highland. Turpentine harvesting and timbering continued until the 1990s. The last burial was in 1959. When the Texaco station owner wanted to pave the area for a parking lot, the McIntosh County Commissioners required him to comply with Georgia's law which protects cemeteries. About 200 burials were found in the area behind the Texaco station, dating back into the mid-1800s. Only 26 were disinterred and reinterred within the fenced area, with a burial service. The remainder were walled of for their protection. Later Pre-historic burials which were found during the Mall construction were also reinterred within this fenced area.
Because the graves are scattered, the cemetery is divided into 2 sections. SECTION A: Behind the Texaco Station.
SECTION B: Northeast of above, behind the current station on Hwy 251. The first 4 graves are from Union Camp Paper Co. plats.
