The cemetery contains at least 11 marked graves and a number that are unmarked. The earliest marked grave is 1857 and the last known burial was in 1933. My great-great grandparents are buried here along with at least three of their children.
According to local legend the area was a stronghold for the rebels during Nathaniel Bacon's 1676 Rebellion in Virginia. The name Old Castle was to differentiate it from nearby Bacon's Castle which did play a role in the 1676 rebellion. I am unaware of any documentation to substantiate any connection of this place to the rebellion.
It is possible there are some African Americans buried here because I know William H. and Sallie H. Berryman owned a small number of slaves. My uncle Cecil Berryman told me he had heard that some slaves might be buried here but I have no proof or documentation.
I first visited this cemetery in 1965 when Cecil took me there. I have not visited it since about 2000 but I hope to do so in the near future to care for this family resting place.
