CEMETERY NOTES: Isaac McCarty (1791-1867), founder of Oakland, settled in the Yough Glades (now Oakland) in 1824 and around 1831 the people in the neighborhood, under his leadership, built a log church on his farm, which served until it was torn down in 1852 and part of the timbers were used in the construction of the new Methodist Church in Oakland. The church acre also served as a community graveyard. When selling his farm, Isaac McCarty reserved the land which contains the graves of the pioneer settlers of Oakland. Remains of early pioneers, including the Thayers, Lohrs, Townsends, and others, were brought from the old burial ground on the Isaac McCarty farm and placed in the Oakland Cemetery. (The Glades Star, Garrett County Historical Society, NO. 5, VOL. II, Oakland, Maryland, March 31, 1951, Pg. 69)
It is not clear which graves were not removed and reinterred in the Oakland Cemetery. A 1985 survey of graves in Garrett County documented five burial sites and that "this cemetery was ‘robbed' several years ago and there is still evidence of opened graves, and many markers are missing."
