Add PhotosThe Cox Graveyard 'was' located at Low Gap, near the New River, in Scott county, Tennessee. This cemetery is located on a knoll across the New River from Low Gap, and is not too far from the 'Red John' Newport Cemetery or Newport Cemetery in the Low Gap area.
There are approximately 9 graves in this graveyard, most of them Sexton's, but apparently some Cox's too, so I would say the Cox's must have been the earliest burials--thus giving the name to the cemetery.
When I copied this cemetery back on October 9th, 1985--I was told this story by Sherman Walker. The land was bought by a newcomer to the area. The new landowner removed all the grave stones and made the area into a pasture. Several lots of the land were sold off to nearby farmers. The cemetery was never reclaimed or put back into it's former condition. Sherman Walker went into the pasture and had his mother dug up and her body removed to the Hazel Valley Cemetery near Oneida.
If anyone knows the names of the people buried here, please add them--or contact me with the information and I will add them in.
